Conforme al plan previsto visitamos Uganda entre el día 12 y el 30 de Diciembre y a pesar de las inquietudes y preocupaciones varias anteriores a nuestra partida en relación a la seguridad, la salud y la incertidumbre de que es lo que nos encontraríamos, hemos conseguido regresar sanos y salvos y con una exitosa aventura a nuestras espaldas. ---According to plan we visited Uganda between 12th and 30th Dec. and despite the several worries and concerns prior to our departure relating to safety, health and uncertainty about what we would find, we have came back healthy and sound and with a successful adventure behind us.
Primeramente y tras 20 horas de viaje caímos en la capital del país Kampala, una ciudad terriblemente sucia y caótica y con un tráfico infernal. Las primeras impresiones nos permitieron comenzar comprender la idiosincrasia de un país asolado por la guerra y el sufrimiento, asediado por la corrupción y la mala gestión, el hambre, el SIDA y las dificultades al desarrollo que las potencias occidentales imponemos a las poblaciones de esta parte del mundo que por otra parte y a pesar de todo luchan por resurgir de sus cenizas y superar el pasado mirando al futuro de forma positiva y alegre. --- After 20 hours of travelling, we arrived in the capital Kampala, a terribly dirty and chaotic city and with a hellish traffic. The first impressions let us begin to understand the idiosyncrasies of a country ravaged by war and suffering, plagued by corruption and mismanagement, famine, AIDS and heavy development difficulties which somehow western powers impose on the people of this part the world. Still they continue struggling to emerge from the ashes and overcome the past looking to the future in a positive and cheerful way.
Tras un par de días de preparativos y entrevistas varias, nos trasladamos a Gulu, al norte del país, donde nos esperaban para comenzar la andadura de revitalizar un proyecto que como ya sabéis había comenzado allá por el 2006, cuando Borja Luque visito esta pequeña ciudad para colaborar con Jolly Grace Okot en su centro terapéutico HEALS. --- After a couple of days of preparation and several interviews, we went to Gulu, in northern Uganda, where we were expecting to begin a journey to revitalize a project which as you know had started back in 2006, when Borja Luque visited this small town to assist Jolly Grace Okot in his therapeutic arts centre HEALS.
Nuestra sorpresa fue considerable cuando confirmamos que lo que habíamos oído hacia apenas unas semanas era cierto. Definitivamente, el centro del que tanto habíamos oído hablar y en el que Borja había comenzado su aventura había sido cerrado por falta de financiación. --- Our surprise was considerable when he confirmed that what we have heard just a few weeks earlier was true. Definitely, the center in which Borgia had begun his adventure had been closed for lack of funding.
Tras entrevistarnos con Jolly y recibir información sobre los acontecimientos que llevaron al cierre del centro, se nos presento un panorama complicado y lleno de dificultades. Tras digerir lo escuchado y valorar la situación, decidimos que aquello no podía influir en nuestras ganas de trabajar y que a pesar de todo íbamos a meternos a sacar adelante una aventura que de momento se antojaba todavía más complicada si cabía. --- After meeting with Jolly and receive information about the events leading to the closure of the center, the scenario was rather complicated and fraught with difficulties. After digesting what we had learnt and after assessing the situation, we decided that it will not put us back and will not influence our desire to work to push forward the porject which looked to be more challenging than ever.
Mientras Borja reunía a los alumnos, 12 en total, 4 chicas y 8 chicos y comenzaba sus clases teóricas de repaso de lo aprendido en el curso anterior, yo me esmeraba y ciertamente me volvía loco organizando la producción para la realización del documental (búsqueda de información local, coordinación de entrevistas y desarrollo del guión junto a Aritz, nuestro realizador) así como en encontrar un lugar donde poder instalar la escuela de fotografía. --- While Borja gathered the students, 12 in total, 4 girls and 8 boys and was beggining to refresh the lessons learned on the previous year, I was certainly struggling to find a place to install the school of photography and to organize the production of the documentary (search for local information, coordinating interviews and developing the screenplay with Aritz, our cameraman)
Necesitábamos un local amplio con al menos tres estancias donde poder instalar un aula, un laboratorio en BN y un estudio fotográfico. La tarea de encontrar un lugar apropiado en apenas dos días no fue en absoluto fácil si bien, tras numerosas gestiones y varias tentativas, finalmente encontramos un par de locales. El primero era una pequeña tienda de apenas 40 m2 dividida en dos espacios. Un lugar limpio y bien situado si bien pequeño para nuestras necesidades. La segunda opción era una casa de tres habitaciones que además incluía cocina, salón, baño y sala de ducha. Tras una dura negociación conseguimos un precio de alquiler de 120 euros mensuales y llegamos a un acuerdo anual por lo que el escollo más difícil había sido superado y la situación comenzaba a estar encauzada. --- We needed a facility with at least three large rooms where we couldset up a classroom, a B/W darkroom and a photographic studio. The task of finding an appropriate place in just two days was not easy at all but after several attempts, we finally found a couple of appropiate premises. The first was a small shop of only 40 m2 divided into two spaces: rather clean and well located but indeed small for our needs. The second option was a three-bedroom house that also included kitchen, living room, bathroom and shower room. After tough bargaining we got an annual rent equivalent of 120 euros a month. The most difficult hurdle had been overcome and the situation was beginning to get underway.
Una vez solucionado el problema del espacio, nos pusimos a valorar nuestra presencia en Gulu y la mejor manera para constituirnos como un ente gestor de formación y eventos culturales. Tras diversas gestiones y averiguaciones nos dimos cuenta de que ser considerados como una asociación sin animo de lucro en Uganda con capacidad de obrar y gestionar proyectos para la comunidad no era tan sencillo y requería de la presencia de un socio Ugandés así como la creación de una organización comunitaria con sus estatutos y un registro oficial en el gobierno central en Kampala. --- Once we had solved the problem with the premises, we began to reconsider our presence in Gulu and the best way to establish ourselves as a local training and cultural events centre. After various efforts and inquiries we realized that being considered a non-profit association in Uganda entitled to act and manage projects for the community was not that easy and required the presence of a Ugandan partner and the creation of a community organization with its charter and a formal registration with the central government in Kampala.
Dado el poco tiempo disponible y la presencia de Jolly decidimos que para empezar nuestra andadura, durante el primer año utilizaríamos HEALS y su cobertura como una organización sin ánimo de lucro legalmente constituida y registrada. Para dejar constancia de nuestro acuerdo, redactamos un convenio de colaboración a tres bandas; por un lado Borja Luque y Luis Arellano como representantes de HYPOHEALS en España, por otro lado un equipo gestor formado por los alumnos y finalmente HEALS con Jolly Grace Okot y con la supervisora Jackeline Ijang al frente. --- Given the little time available and the presence of Jolly, we decided that to begin our journey during the first year, we would use HEALS as it was already a non-profit organization legally registered. For the record of our agreement, we drafted a cooperation agreement with three main parts, on the one hand Borja Luque and Luis Arellano HYPOHEALS representatives in Spain, second, the management team of the students and finally HEALS with Jolly Grace Okot and Jackeline Ijang as supervisor.
En este convenio se especificaron y estipularon las normas de funcionamiento del centro, la gestión de sus recursos de una forma cooperativista y solidaria y las tareas y obligaciones del equipo gestor y del supervisor de HEALS a cargo de la supervisión de la labor gestora del equipo gestor formado por todos los alumnos. --- In the agreement, we stipulated the rules of operation of the center, the management of their resources in a cooperative and supportive and the tasks and duties of team manager and the duties of the supervisor of HEALS who would be in charge of supervising the work of the management team.
Acto seguido procedimos a la apertura de una cuenta bancaria con el fin de facilitar los ingresos y envíos financieros necesarios para el mantenimiento del centro así como la realización de pagos al propietario del centro, el pago de facturas de electricidad y agua así como otros gastos que se puedan derivar de la gestión del mismo. --- After that, we proceeded to open a bank account in order to facilitate the finantial side of the project: shipments of money, management of financial resources to maintain the center such as making payments to the owner of the center, paying electricity and water bills and other expenses that might arise.
Una vez finalizadas todas las gestiones legales y tras recolectar todos lo equipos y materiales que habían quedado en Gulu en el pasado y realizar un inventario junto a los nuevos equipos portados por nuestra expedición , comenzamos una ronda de reuniones en las que pretendíamos organizar el espacio y la forma de funcionamiento del mismo. Si bien somos muy conscientes de que nuestras propuestas son meramente un primer paso para que comience la andadura de HYPOHEALS en Gulu, sabemos que la situación en África es harto complicada y la forma de proceder y funcionar ciertamente diferente a la nuestra por lo que la mejor opción fue la de intentar crear una cooperativa en la que los alumnos tomasen responsabilidad y gestionasen su espacio a su manera. --- Once all legal formalities were completed and after collecting all the equipment and materials that were left in Gulu in the past and create an inventory with new equipment carried by the new expedition, we began a round of meetings where we wanted to organize the space and the form of operation. While we were very aware that our proposals were only the first step to begin the journey of HYPOHEALS in Gulu, we knew that the situation in Africa is very complicated as their ways of functioning were indeed rather different from ours and so the best option was to try to create a cooperative in which students would take responsibility and manage their space in their own way.
Ahora ya solo queda que ellos continuen con la andadura, reciban a los profesores que les enviemos para realizar cursos y que sean ellos los que organizen nuevos cursos de iniciacion para que otros participantes puedan disfrutar a su vez de la oportunidad de aprender la bella disciplina de la fotografia y puedan desarrollarse un dia como fotografos y realizadores de video profesionalesSabemos que queda un largo camino y mucho trabajo por hacer y sabemos que no será facil si bien esperamos que entre todos los socios y colaboradores podamos sacar adelante esta inciativa que esperamos proporcione opciones reales y dignas a los participantes. --- Now it is just about them continuing their journey, to welcome the teachers we will send to them and them organising new courses so other participants can benefit from the opportunity of learning the beautiful discipline photography and maybe one day they can progress as professional photographers and filmmakers. We know we have a long way to go and lot of work to be done and we hope that we will be able to push this project forward with the help of all members, partners and staff so we can provide real options to the participants.
Nuestro compromiso estaba claro: asegurar la permanencia de este espacio de trabajo y creación visual y facilitar la creación de la cooperativa asi como motivar a los alumnos/as participantes para que sean ellos los que tengan la oportunidad de sacar adelante este proyecto cooperativista y de autogestión. --- Our commitment was clear: to ensure the existence of this working space for audiovisual creation and to facilitate the creation of the cooperative as well as to motivate students and participants to be themselves and to enjoy and take advantage of the opportunity to move forward with this self-management and cooperative project.
Con el fin de promocionar mas aún la labor de nuestra asociación nos hemos embarcado en la producción de un película documental que dejará constancia del proyecto y que esperamos sirva para dar a conocer la situación tan difícil que se vive en aquel país en África central. Además estamos ya trabajando en una exposición de gran formato que incluirá principalmente imágenes producidas por los participantes en el curso de perfeccionamiento así como imágenes realizadas de Borja Luque, Luis Arellano y Natalia Ardanaz y la proyección de la película documental. --- To promote even more the work of our association we are engaged in the production of a documentary film that will record the project and that we hope will raise awareness about the difficult situation that prevails in that country in central Africa. In addition we are already working on a large format photographic exhibition which mainly include images produced by participants in the training course as well as some few images taken byBorja Luque, Luis Arellano and Natalia Ardanaz and also includes the showing of the documentary film.
Ambas iniciativas estarán listas para su presentación en Octubre del 2010 fecha en la que de nuevo estaremos preparando nuestra segunda visita a Gulu allá por noviembre del 2010. --- Both initiatives will be ready in October 2010 when we will also be preparing our next visit to gulu in November 2010.
